President Obama Forum Attendee Laments DREAM Act Failure

Ana Roa Arrázola, who questioned the president about immigration policies in October, calls Senate vote 'heartbreaking.'
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Saturday's Senate vote yielded the historic passing of a bill that will end the armed forces' polarizing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. However, the day was also low point for supporters of the DREAM Act, a measure which would have helped some illegal immigrants who entered the United States as children and have contributed to society earn citizenship.

The vote was especially disappointing for Ana Roa Arrázola, a student who bravely questioned President Barack Obama about the nation's frustratingly complex immigration process at MTV's October town hall, "A Conversation with President Obama." The commander in chief promised Arrázola, who entered the country legally but is unable to return to her native Colombia to visit her 92-year-old grandmother because of her immigrant status, that he would follow up with her. When MTV News caught up with her on Saturday, she revealed she that did visit the White House, but said Sunday's vote was demoralizing.

"I feel like the democrats put that in as like a collateral to 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' So I feel like it was gonna be 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' or the DREAM Act. 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' had a lot of strength and a lot of support," she said. "I think it was just the right time for Don't Ask, Don't Tell and, unfortunately, that kind of left the DREAM Act in the dust, which is really sad and heartbreaking."

Arrázola said she and other immigrants eager to reconnect with loved ones for the holidays were hoping for an outcome that might have cleared up much of the red tape surrounding the immigration process.

"It's difficult because it's the holiday season, and it's a time for people to be cheery and be happy and find reasons to be happy," she said. "I think a lot of us were counting on the DREAM Act, kind of as a Christmas present to bring some hope for the new year."

Unlike many grappling with the immigration experience in America, Arrázola was able to visit the White House and speak directly to members of President Obama's administration. While her personal situation remains unchanged, she maintained that re-shaping the labyrinthine path to citizenship must begin with lawmakers.

"I did get a chance to go to the White House and I met with a few people there," she said. "I got to talk to them and they were like, 'Oh your story's great, we're so proud that you've gotten so far.' But at the same time there's nothing they can do. It's disappointing that there's nothing they can do but it makes sense because the United States wasn't built on [the idea] 'let's help one individual at a time.' They have to pass legislation."

Arrázola added that shaking up the status quo is not only in the hands of President Obama, and implored politicians to reach across party lines to pass life-changing legislation.

"I think [President Obama has] done a good job. What I would say — not to President Obama because he can only do so much — I feel like what I would say to all the Democrats that voted against the DREAM Act and all of the Republicans who refused to vote for this bill, [is that] it was initially a bipartisan initiative. It wasn't particularly a Democrat bill or a Republican bill. I would just tell them that normal people, everyday people are not living on a red or blue basis," she said. "We're mostly just trying to get going with our lives to be able to accomplish our goals to maybe even go back home and visit our families. We're not living in a partisan world where we just try to keep people who don't agree with us from getting things done."

What do you think about the DREAM Act getting blocked? Let us know in the comments!

"Tron Legacy" is on track to turn the Disney sci-fi series into a money-making franchise.

The sequel to the innovative 1982 video-game fantasy flick snagged the top spot at the Friday box office. Jeff Bridges returns as a gifted programmer whose unexplained disappearance prompts his son, played by Garrett Hedlund, to venture into the computer world to search for him. The film ventured into theaters on opening day with $18 million.

Another visual effects extravaganza, "Yogi Bear," debuted in the top five as well, scoring the second-place slot. The CGI-enhanced revamp of the beloved animated Hanna-Barbera series, which features Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake voicing the picnic-basket-snatching duo or Yogi and Boo Boo, grabbed $4.6 million on Friday.

Debuting nationwide in third place is the pugilism drama "The Fighter." Mark Wahlberg's portrayal of scrappy Massachusetts-born welterweight boxer Micky Ward, which is backed by performances from Christian Bale and Amy Adams, nabbed $3.9 million on Friday.

"Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" headed into the weekend closely behind "The Fighter" with $3.5 million. The glossy onscreen adaptation of the classic literature series has pulled in an estimated $33.9 million since hitting theaters last week.

Rounding out the top five is the star-studded romantic comedy "How Do You Know." Boasting a top-flight lineup that includes Jack Nicholson and focuses on Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd who are caught up in an increasingly messy love triangle, the flick picked up $2.5 million as it headed into the weekend.

Check out everything we've got on "Tron Legacy," "Yogi Bear" and "The Fighter."

Ronnie Ortiz Indicted For Jersey Shore Assault

Jersey Shore star Ronnie Ortiz (also known as Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Ronnie Magro) has been formally indicted by New Jersey grand jury on an assault charge.

The legal trouble for Ron stems from an episode from the MTV reality series. The title of the episode during with he cold-cocked Stephen Izzo? "One Shot."

Ortiz faces up to five years in state prison for third-degree assault.

Douche-Tastic

DOUCHE-TASTIC: And this was before his new tattoo!

The meathead “purposely or knowingly caused significant bodily injury to Stephen Izzo by striking in the face with a closed fist," the indictment reads.

Izzo is already suing Ortiz, MTV, Jersey Shore producers and the nightclub over the assault, which caused him to lose consciousness. Pretty bad stuff.

Not bad enough for the show to tone down the violence, of course. If these clips from Jersey Shore Season 3 are any indication, it's gonna be a wild winter.

Brad Womack Talks 'The Bachelor': He's Happy, In Love, Hopes It's Not a Boring Season

122029_D_0191_pre.jpgHere are the highlights from returning Bachelor Brad Womack's conference call from yesterday, in which reporters grilled him about feelings, very much in the same way that the women on The Bachelor will grill him about feelings on the first episode. He's getting good at this! Questions in bold. Brad's answers in non-bold. My commentary in italics. Good ol' slanting italics, like ready-made sarcasm.

Did you feel that pressure going in and throughout filming the show that "if I don't pick someone at the end, I'm screwed"?
Brad Womack: No, not at all. You know something, I almost sound like a jerk when I say this, but you know, love and all of it, I take that very seriously, and not a chance would I let anyone pressure me to make any kind of decision like that, any decision at all for that matter. So, I definitely make my own decisions and felt no pressure. I can truthfully say that. [...]  Even though I would have been publicly exiled, I would have walked away again. So I didn't feel pressure, but I'm happy to say I did fall in love and I've very, very happy. So I'm grateful to have had a second chance.

Brad thinks he sounds like a jerk for saying that he takes love seriously, and would never let someone pressure him into proposing. I think he'd sound like a jerk if he said the opposite. Romance reality television is still weird. Also, "publicly exiled"? As a public, we should probably reassess how and why we exile, you guys. That sounds way too extreme, even for us.

'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Season 1, Episode 9 Recap

Filed under:

'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' - 'The Dinner Party From Hell'['The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'- 'Dinner Party From Hell']

On this week's episode of 'The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,' Camille tried to unite her sisters in superficiality by throwing a dinner party at her house. To round out the group she invited her BFF Deidre and the real woman behind the TV show 'Medium.' As if we needed a psychic to predict how this meal would play out.

Camille claimed from the start that she wanted to make amends, let bygones be bygones and fire up her pizza oven. And before the crazy sh*t-slinging commenced, the party looked divine. There were cocktails and a wait staff and Camille's friend Allison, who can sense the presence of your dead grandmother and the M.O. of your standard serial killer. Allison is creepy and maniacal-the perfect addition to an already fraught dinner party.
